Westerham Heights Garden Centre
Climbing Plants are great for covering walls, fences and other large outdoor spaces. They provide flower, fragrance and foliage among your garden and act as a home for many types of nature.
Climbers have a natural tendency to climb and some will even self-cling, without requiring tying to supports, others however will need extra support to make them sturdy. With specific pruning and training techniques, they can be trained to grow against walls and objects.
WHICH IS THE BEST CLIMBER FOR ME?
When choosing a climber or wall shrub, it is important to consider several factors -
Aspect - Sun loving plants wont thrive against a shady wall.
Size - Match the vigor of the plant to the allotted space.
Hardiness - Do not plant tender plants in an exposed situation.
Climbing Habit - Some climbers such as Campsis are self clinging, but other climbers require supports and tying in.
PRUNING AND TRAINING
We highly advise putting up supports and training young plants from early. Regular pruning keeps climbers and wall shrubs attractive and tidy. Some climbers such as Campsis, Clematis, Honeysuckle and Wisteria have slightly different requirements, so always be sure to check plant labels or ask a member of staff. It is important to keep a close eye on wall climbers as they can get out of hand quickly!
